South Africa's 2026 local government elections in eThekwini remain highly competitive, with no single party or candidate commanding a clear path to the mayoralty amid a fragmented council and coalition dynamics. Cyril Xaba, the incumbent ANC mayor, holds a frontrunner position within his party but faces headwinds from voter concerns over service delivery and governance. Haniff Hoosen of the DA, Zwakele Mncwango of ActionSA, Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi of the EFF, and other contenders including Zandile Gumede have all been positioned through recent party announcements, keeping implied probabilities clustered near 40-50%. Trader consensus reflects uncertainty over turnout among key voting blocs, potential post-election alliances, and the impact of ongoing municipal performance issues, with separation likely hinging on final campaign momentum or coalition negotiations after results.
