The three-candidate race for Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor remains closely contested ahead of the October 26, 2026 municipal election, with nominations closing August 21 and no public polls available to shift trader consensus. Incumbent Gary Zalepa’s decision to pursue the regional chair instead has opened the field to Erwin Wiens, who brings deputy lord mayor and council experience since 2018; Andrea Kaiser, the current regional councillor emphasizing continuity; and Vaughn Goettler, a returning candidate focused on controlled growth. Shared priorities around heritage protection, development pressures, taxes, and resistance to amalgamation keep the contest balanced, while upcoming mayoral forums and the introduction of online advance voting could allow any contender to gain visibility and separate from the pack based on local name recognition and issue emphasis.
