The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) records the most recent magnitude 7.0+ earthquake as a 7.4 event on April 1, 2026, 126 km west-northwest of Ternate, Indonesia, along the tectonically active Sunda Trench in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This capped a cluster of four such quakes in early 2026, including a 7.3 near Vanuatu on March 30 and 7.5 off Tonga on March 24, amid no M7+ activity in the past 15 days. Globally, USGS data shows 15-20 magnitude 7.0+ events annually on average, driven by plate boundary interactions, but short-term forecasting remains impossible due to chaotic seismic processes. Traders monitor real-time USGS feeds and weekly significant earthquake summaries for shifts, as aftershock sequences or new fault slips could trigger the next event.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until the end of the month following resolution time or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
