Recent polling shows both Labour and National slumping below 30 percent support ahead of the November 7 election, with Labour holding a narrow edge in party vote that underpins its slight lead for second place. Votes appear to be shifting toward minor parties including the Greens, New Zealand First, ACT, and the Opportunity Party, creating volatility in seat projections under MMP rules and raising the prospect of a hung parliament. This fragmentation keeps the contest between the two largest parties tight, as any further movement in minor-party thresholds or electorate outcomes could alter final rankings. Traders are pricing in the closely matched major-party position while awaiting further polls and campaign developments that could widen the gap before election day.
