Massachusetts voters will decide Question 3 on November 3, 2026, which would replace separate party primaries with a single all-party primary advancing the top two candidates regardless of affiliation. The measure cleared legal hurdles in June after the Supreme Judicial Court rejected challenges from Democratic committee members. It has backing from reform advocates including Harvard professor Danielle Allen and moderate Democrats such as Representatives Jake Auchincloss and Seth Moulton, who argue it could curb polarization and boost general-election turnout. However, both major parties, Senate Majority Leader Ed Markey, and a coalition of 27 current elected officials oppose it, citing risks of same-party general-election matchups, greater donor influence, and weakened party roles. Recent nonpartisan analyses note modest potential effects based on experience in California and Washington, leaving the outcome closely balanced ahead of the vote.
